Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin returns to DFP next month to perform with the MPO
Dewan Filharmonik Petronas
THE last time Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin performed at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas was in 2001.
Only 22 then, she had just released her sixth album Sahmura and was a guest performer at Tan Sri S.M. Salim’s concert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. She sang Pandang Pandang, Jeling Jeling (a duet with the veteran singer) and Mohon Kasih. The experience was priceless.
Returning to DFP next month to perform with the MPO in her own symphonic concert Siti Nurhaliza In Symphony: Live With The MPO, she says: “It is my dream come true.”
The 34-year-old star and entrepreneur, who celebrates her 18th anniversary in the music industry this year, joins other popular artistes who have performed with the reputed orchestra including Datuk Sheila Majid (2010) and Datuk M. Nasir (2012).
Her concert, with the MPO under the baton of Kevin Field, will take the audience on a musical journey — from her humble beginnings in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, to her present status as one of the iconic superstars in this region.
Fans will be enthralled with the MPO’s symphonic interpretations of some of her biggest hits such as a medley of Jerat Percintaan, Diari Hatimu and Percayalah, Muara Hati, Cindai, Biarlah Rahsia, Hanya Dia, Seindah Biasa, Badarsila, Kau Kekasihku and Di Taman Teman. She will also pay tribute to Tan Sri P. Ramlee, M.Nasir and Datuk Sudirman Arshad.
In a recent interview, she says: “Each song has its strengths, and each one tells a story that means a lot to me.”
She describes the medley of Jerat Percintaan, Diari Hatimu and Percayalah as “the songs that are close to my heart and among her fans’ favourites”.
“Jerat Percintaan marks my journey in the industry because it is taken from my 1996 self-titled debut album. It won several awards at the 11th Anugerah Juara Lagu including Song of the Year and introduced me to the music industry. Bukan Cinta Biasa is a beautiful love song with lyrics that I co-wrote with Indonesian composer Dewiq, while Diari Hatimu is favourite among my fans. I also wrote the lyrics to Percayalah, a heart-wrenching ballad that means a lot to me and my fans,” she says.
She will pay tribute to P. Ramlee and M. Nasir with a medley of P. Ramlee’s popular songs (Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang and Tiada kata Secantik Bahasa) and M. Nasir’s hit, Senandung Semalam (made popular by Alleycats).
On Senandung Semalam, she explains: “This is my tribute to a living legend and a sifu (master) of the music industry. With music from the MPO, I can only imagine how beautiful it will sound.”
She adds that picking songs by P. Ramlee was not easy. “There are just too many great songs that he had written and performed. Tonight’s songs were chosen because of their beautiful melody and poetic lyrics,” says Siti.
For Sudirman’s tribute, she will perform the hit ballad Terasing, “which has a beautiful melody with powerful lyrics that pierce the hearts”.
Other songs include the hit ballad Purnama Merindu which she recorded at the age of 19 (for the fourth album Adiwarna). “The song has a beautiful melody and it brought victory to me at the 1999 Asian Music Festival in Shanghai, among other great memories.”
As for Biarlah Rahsia, which was recorded at the height of the rumour behind Siti’s love life (she later married businessman Datuk Seri Khalid Mohd Jiwa in 2006), she says: “It encapsulates everything that I felt at the time through the lyrics which I wrote.”
Discovered at Bintang HMI, a talent competition produced by RTM, in 1995, Siti released her successful debut album a year later. At 20, she presented her first solo concert at Bukit Jalil in 1999. This was followed by a successful concert at the world renowned Royal Albert Hall, London in 2005. A 13-State tour called Konsert Fantasia Tour followed suit, as well as concerts in Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei.
Having garnered more than 200 accolades in her illustrious career, her name was twice included in the prestigious The Malaysia Book Of Records. She was also bestowed Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) which carried the title Datuk, by the DYMM Sultan Pahang for her vast contribution in the music industry.
Besides her busy schedule as a singer and ambassadors for several brands, Siti is also the face for Duta Muhibbah Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah, Duta Tabung Sepenuh Hati Jusco, and, together with her husband, founded Yayasan Nur Jiwa which primary focus is to help those in need.
