Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin returns to DFP next month to perform with the MPO

Dewan Filharmonik Petronas

THE last time Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin performed at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas was in 2001.
Only 22 then, she had just released her sixth album Sahmura and was a guest performer at Tan Sri S.M. Salim’s concert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. She sang Pandang Pandang, Jeling Jeling (a duet with the veteran singer) and Mohon Kasih. The experience was priceless.
Returning to DFP next month to perform with the MPO in her own symphonic concert Siti Nurhaliza In Symphony: Live With The MPO, she says: “It is my dream come true.”
The 34-year-old star and entrepreneur, who celebrates her 18th anniversary in the music industry this year, joins other popular artistes who have performed with the reputed orchestra including Datuk Sheila Majid (2010) and Datuk M. Nasir (2012).
Her concert, with the MPO under the baton of Kevin Field, will take the audience on a musical journey — from her humble beginnings in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, to her present status as one of the iconic superstars in this region.
Fans will be enthralled with the MPO’s symphonic interpretations of some of her biggest hits such as a medley of Jerat Percintaan, Diari Hatimu and Percayalah, Muara Hati, Cindai, Biarlah Rahsia, Hanya Dia, Seindah Biasa, Badarsila, Kau Kekasihku and Di Taman Teman. She will also pay tribute to Tan Sri P. Ramlee, M.Nasir and Datuk Sudirman Arshad.
In a recent interview, she says: “Each song has its strengths, and each one tells a story that means a lot to me.”
She describes the medley of Jerat Percintaan, Diari Hatimu and Percayalah as “the songs that are close to my heart and among her fans’ favourites”.
“Jerat Percintaan marks my journey in the industry because it is taken from my 1996 self-titled debut album. It won several awards at the 11th Anugerah Juara Lagu including Song of the Year and introduced me to the music industry. Bukan Cinta Biasa is a beautiful love song with lyrics that I co-wrote with Indonesian composer Dewiq, while Diari Hatimu is favourite among my fans. I also wrote the lyrics to Percayalah, a heart-wrenching ballad that means a lot to me and my fans,” she says.
She will pay tribute to P. Ramlee and M. Nasir with a medley of P. Ramlee’s popular songs (Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang and Tiada kata Secantik Bahasa) and M. Nasir’s hit, Senandung Semalam (made popular by Alleycats).
On Senandung Semalam, she explains: “This is my tribute to a living legend and a sifu (master) of the music industry. With music from the MPO, I can only imagine how beautiful it will sound.”
She adds that picking songs by P. Ramlee was not easy. “There are just too many great songs that he had written and performed. Tonight’s songs were chosen because of their beautiful melody and poetic lyrics,” says Siti.
For Sudirman’s tribute, she will perform the hit ballad Terasing, “which has a beautiful melody with powerful lyrics that pierce the hearts”.
Other songs include the hit ballad Purnama Merindu which she recorded at the age of 19 (for the fourth album Adiwarna). “The song has a beautiful melody and it brought victory to me at the 1999 Asian Music Festival in Shanghai, among other great memories.”
As for Biarlah Rahsia, which was recorded at the height of the rumour behind Siti’s love life (she later married businessman Datuk Seri Khalid Mohd Jiwa in 2006), she says: “It encapsulates everything that I felt at the time through the lyrics which I wrote.”
Discovered at Bintang HMI, a talent competition produced by RTM, in 1995, Siti released her successful debut album a year later. At 20, she presented her first solo concert at Bukit Jalil in 1999. This was followed by a successful concert at the world renowned Royal Albert Hall, London in 2005. A 13-State tour called Konsert Fantasia Tour followed suit, as well as concerts in Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei.
Having garnered more than 200 accolades in her illustrious career, her name was twice included in the prestigious The Malaysia Book Of Records. She was also bestowed Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) which carried the title Datuk, by the DYMM Sultan Pahang for her vast contribution in the music industry.
Besides her busy schedule as a singer and ambassadors for several brands, Siti is also the face for Duta Muhibbah Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah, Duta Tabung Sepenuh Hati Jusco, and, together with her husband, founded Yayasan Nur Jiwa which primary focus is to help those in need.

Concert Reviews

A symphony of sweet notes

THE moment Siti Nurhaliza sang the first note, she was greeted with loud applause. And as the Siti Nurhaliza in Symphony concert progressed in the concert hall of the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the applause grew louder.
Sitting among the audience that evening were some top honchos from the music industry in New York who had made a special effort to check out our songstress. We heard they were in Dubai for another engagement and had made a stopover in Kuala Lumpur just to catch Siti in action.
One could not help but speculate that Siti will be offered a recording deal soon. Only time will tell if this is true. Anyway, these gentlemen were enjoying the concert despite the language barrier.
Midway through the concert, Siti said she owes her career to the “kipas yang susah mati” (fan who would not die).
Smiling at the confused looks on the audience’s faces, she explained that she meant her diehard fans.
It’s true that her jokes can be a little too simplistic but her fans did not mind as they were too mesmerised by her. They were just thrilled to have their idol speaking directly to them. In their eyes, Siti can do no wrong.
Aside from this, I must admit that the singer from Pahang gave an almost flawless performance. From her opening song, Kau Kekasihku, to the encore, Muara Hati, Siti kept her audience entertained.
The range in her voice was amazing. After having been singing in the industry for the last two decades, Siti has shown that, like wine, her voice only gets better with time.
Some singers have the tendency to scream just to show off their powerful vocals. In the process, the songs get distorted.
Siti, however, showed good control of her vocals. And she knew exactly how to modulate her voice accordingly with effortless precision.
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), with conductor Kevin Field at the helm, also deserved praise for making this concert memorable.
This was the second time Siti has performed at this venue. The first time she sang at DFP was in 2001 when she was a guest artiste of S.M. Salim at his Tan Sri S.M. Salim with MPO concert. There, she did a duet with Salim on Pandang Jeling Jeling and also sang Mohon Kasih.
Among my favourite moments during the concert was when Siti sang Senandung Semalam, a song composed by M. Nasir and made popular by the group, Alleycats.
Siti told the press after the concert that this song was her tribute to Nasir, who is a living legend and ‘sifu’ (master) of the music industry.
“With music performed by the MPO, I could only imagine how beautiful it would sound,” she emphasised.
And Siti was absolutely right. If Nasir were in the audience, he would have been impressed with the rendition.
My other favourite moment was when Siti paid tribute to legendary artiste Tan Sri P. Ramlee by singing a medley of his songs – Malam Bulan Dipagar Bintang (from the movie, Pendekar Bujang Lapuk) and Tiada Kata Secantik Bahasa (from Anakku Sazali).
She said in a note in the concert programme booklet: “Picking songs by Tan Sri P. Ramlee as a tribute to the legend was not easy for me. There are just too many great songs that he had written. Tonight’s songs were chosen because of their beautiful melodies and lyrics.”
One song that got my feet tapping was the upbeat Cindai, featuring the sounds of middle eastern drums called darbuka. Siti also made some effort to play the drums herself, which was pretty impressive.
She also included a new song, Lebih Indah, in her repertoire. This song will be featured in her upcoming album to be released at the end of the year.
Lebih Indah reflects the emotions she went through last year when her husband, Datuk Seri Khalid Mohamad Jiwa (better known as Datuk K), was involved in a motorbike incident in New Zealand.
“I wanted a positive title for this song,” she said after the concert.
Siti will also be holding a concert at Istana Budaya in September and many of her fans, including yours truly, will be eagerly looking forward to that.

Utterly bewitching

Heart and soul: Looking as glamorous as ever, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza was in fine voice during her three-night concert series at Dewan Filharmonik Petronasin Kuala Lumpur.
Heart and soul: Looking as glamorous as ever, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza was in fine voice during her three-night concert series at Dewan Filharmonik Petronasin Kuala Lumpur.
Even with symphonic backing, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza was every inch the star of the show.
BRAVING the traffic crawl to the Kuala Lumpur city centre on Friday night wasn’t something I looked forward to. But this was no ordinary Friday night – it was Malay pop darling Datuk Siti Nurhaliza’s big date at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), the first of her three-night concert series, which promised to add another milestone to her career.
Billed as Siti Nurhaliza In Symphony Live With The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the shows were sold out weeks after they were announced earlier this year.
For those who managed to get tickets, Siti’s performance last Friday at DFP lived up to its hype.
On stage, Siti, who has not lost her manja smile, was the focus of attention as she tackled live symphonic performances of favourites from her career songbook.
The backing of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Kevin Field, made all the difference as Siti’s tunes were carefully rearranged, perfumed and lifted to the next level.
Siti, 34, now joins an illustrious list of singers to work with the MPO, including Tan Sri SM Salim, Datuk M. Nasir and Datuk Sheila Majid.
The packed concert hall proved that these Siti showcases – with local flavour and charm – were apt closers for the DFP/MPO 2012/2013 concert season.
Looking resplendent in a dress designed by Khoon Hooi, Siti stirred up the evening with the all-time favourite Kau Kekasihku.
This song, originally composed by Ajai, was given a new orchestral arrangement by composer/producer Jenny Chin.
Backed by an 80-piece MPO ensemble and watched by a hushed audience, there was no way that Siti could go wrong with this infectious ballad.
The song, which is about love lost, showcased Siti’s vocal prowess as the chorus was sung on the upper register. And as expected, Siti sang the poignant song beautifully.
What a start it was at DFP!
Siti promised her fans a musical journey through her career, with her songs – in pop, R&B and traditional genres – given fresh symphonic arrangements.
Looking back, it has been 12 years since Siti first performed on the prestigious DFP stage.
Back in 2001, she was a guest performer at Tan Sri SM Salim’s concert with the MPO where she sang Pandang Pandang Jeling Jeling and Mohon Kasih.
Returning to DFP in her own symphonic concert series to mark her 18th anniversary in the music industry was, quite simply, a dream come true for her.
Siti was enjoying each and every minute on the DFP stage.
One of the show’s heart-shaped highlights was a medley of her ballads Jerat Percintaan (taken from her 1996’s self-titled debut), Bukan Cinta Biasa (the song for which Siti co-wrote the lyrics), Diari Hatimu and Percayalah.
“Wow! What a relief!” said Siti cheekily, referring to the challenges posed by the medley of ballads.
“Seriously I was thinking, ‘Will I be able to pull this one off?’ Thank God I did,” she added with a laugh.
It was easy to see why thousands of fans are crazy about her.
Watching Siti on stage was an illuminating experience – there is a certain magic in the way she performs and gets deep inside her songs.
Despite her success and media overexposure (according to some cynics), Siti remains that sweet, affable and gracious girl-next-door type.
Never someone to forget her roots, Siti also made it a point to pay tribute to those who inspired her.
And to show her gratitude, Siti performed a medley of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s songs – Malam Bulan Di Pagar Bintang and Tiada Kata Secantik Bahasa.
“This is my tribute to the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee who inspired me to be where I am today,” she said.
As for fan favourites, Siti performed the huge hit Biarlah Rahsia from 2006. The tune, as most fans know, detailed everything that went through her heart with regards to her love life back then. And again, Siti didn’t disappoint with a wonderful string-laden sweep through Biarlah Rahsia, which I felt was her most beautiful rendition for the night.
At the end of her song, Siti half-jokingly said that performing with an orchestra ensemble wasn’t easy. Her banter brought the artiste and audience closer to each other.
Popular tracks such as Hanya DiaSeindah BiasaBalqisKu MahuCindai and Di Taman Teman further enthralled the fans.
And her concert would not have been complete if she didn’t introduce Purnama Merindu, which was recorded when Siti was just 19 (for her fourth album Adiwarna). Throughout the evening, Siti and the MPO ensemble mesmerised the crowd, but trust the singer to also include songs that were also close to her heart, such as M. Nasir’s heartfelt compositionSenandung Semalam (made popular by Alleycats) and Datuk Sudirman Haji Arshad’s Terasing.
She concluded that night at DFP with a beautiful version ofMuara Hati (a duet recorded with Hafiz), which she handled lovingly on her own.
Both formidable and adorable, Siti delivered in spades despite the ramped up expections at DFP. Oh yes, she still has it.

Rasa bagai nak demam

Penghargaan buat legenda negara

Syabas Datuk Siti Nurhaliza.

Kelunakan Suara, Senjata Dato` Siti Nurhaliza Di DFP

"Memang lagu perlahan iaitu lagu-lagu balad menguji ketahanan vokal saya.
